The Only Exception Treatment

Only Exception Video Treatment

INT. BOYFRIEND’S APARTMENT “SET” - MORNING

We pan across an old, worn out sofa. Rays of light are coming through the windows, and tiny dust particles can be seen floating through the air as we pan over to Hayley laying down beside her boyfriend. They had fallen asleep watching a movie, which is now nothing but static running over and over. As we close in on Hayley’s face, her eyes open, and we can see that she is sad, confused about what she’s doing and where she is. She gets up, and and fumbles around for a pen and paper. As we see her walk out, we get a shot of the note.

“I’m sorry.”

Hayley begins walking out the door, and immediately enters into another apartment

INT. DAD’S APARTMENT “SET” - MORNING

PARAMORE “When I was younger I saw”

As Hayley enters, her father greets her with a hug, Hayley has a tear streaming down her face, and he holds her.

PARAMORE “My daddy cry, and curse at the wind”

PARAMORE “He broke his own heart and I watched, as he tried to reassemble it”

We go through a series of shots of him talking to her, and her feeling better. Then a shot of him with his back to her talking, and she notices a picture and slips it in her pocket.

PARAMORE “My Momma swore that she would never let herself forget.”

Then another shot of her hugging him to leave. Hayley exits Dad’s apartment and enters into her room now. She walks over to her vanity and sticks the old photo up in her mirror

PARAMORE “That was the day that I promised to never sing of love, if it does not exist”

INT. HAYLEY’S ROOM

WE PULL OUT FROM AN EXTREME CLOSE UP OF HAYLEY SINGING. AS WE CONTINUE TO PULL AWAY, WE NOTICE THAT HAYLEY IS SURROUNDED BY THOUSANDS OF VALENTINE’S DAY CARDS. MAYBE HAVE A FEW CU SHOTS OF SPECIFIC ONES…OR STAY JUST ON HAYLEY THE ENTIRE CHORUS AS IT PULLS OUT.

INT. STAGE

Throughout the video, the band sits on apple boxes and crates performing the song. We will cut to it.

PARAMORE “You are the only exception. You are the only exception. You are the only exception. You are the only exception.”

INT. HAYLEY’S ROOM

WE SEE HAYLEY’S REFLECTION IN THE VANITY MIRROR. SHE IS SINGING TO HERSELF AS SHE APPLIES HER MAKEUP.

PARAMORE “Maybe I know somewhere, deep in my soul, that love never lasts.”

She walks behind a red curtain in her room (which separates her closet from her bedroom) and we see a shot of her deciding what to wear. Various shots of dresses, tops, shoes…ect. Hayley then emerges, decked out in a very “Date Night” look.

PARAMORE “We’ve got to find other ways to make

it alone, or keep a straight face.”

INT. RESTAURANT - NIGHT

Hayley walks into a fine restaurant and signals a table for two. As she sits down with a guy, she is smiling and talking with him. As she continues to talk, the world around Hayley begins moving as a “fast forward” pace, and different guys keep sitting at the table, the expression on Hayley’s face begins to go numb.

PARAMORE “I’ve always lived like this, keeping a comfortable distance.”

Hayley throws her napkin down and runs out of the restaurant, and straight into a church.

PARAMORE “Up until now I had sworn to myself that I’m content with loneliness, be- cause none of it was ever worth the risk”

INT. “STAGE” Band Performance - Full Second Chorus INT. CHURCH - DAY

We cut between the performance shots and the church setting. We pan left across a pew as the people in it are admiring whatever is in front of them, and using the right lens, only the people in the pew are in focus. As we pan over the aisle, a bride can be seen walking down, but she is out of focus as we continue to pan, finally arriving at Hayley in the pew across the aisle. She is looking ahead and down, as everyone else is looking back.

PARAMORE “You are the only exception. You are the only exception. You are the only exception. You are the only exception.”

As soon as the bride walks in front of Hayley (we never see the bride’s face), Hayley gets up and runs out of the church. As Hayley runs out of the front door of the church, she emerges directly into a crowd of people at a club.

BRIDGE INSTRUMENTAL INT. “CLUB” - NIGHT

A rock band is playing. Hayley takes off her “nice” wedding jacket and has a black t shirt underneath, and begins jumping up and down. A guy is crowd surfing. It’s home to Hayley and we can see it on her face. As the lyrics of the bridge begin, everything around Hayley goes into slow motion.

PARAMORE “I’ve got a tight grip on reality but I can’t let go of what’s in front of me here”

Cutting back and forth between performance shots

PARAMORE “I know you’re leaving in the morning when you wake up. Leave me with some kind of truth it’s not a dream”

SHOT - DESCRIPTION

As everyone is jumping, Hayley can see “Boyfriend” through the crowd, as everything is in slow motion. As Hayley sees him, the quieter “You are the only exception” lyrics begin, and Hayley realizes that the “boyfriend” Has been with her from the very beginning. He was by her when she was looking at the photo, he put his hand on her shoulder. He was at the restaurant, looking at her from a different table as she dated other guys. He was at the wedding, looking at her from another pew. He’s always been there for her.

PARAMORE “You are the only exception. You are the only exception. You are the only exception. You are the only exception.”

Hayley turns around and runs out of the club. She begins running backwards through all the “sets” until she finally arrives back at her boyfriends apartment. She has been playing over all these memories in her mind, and now she knows she doesn’t want to leave. She sneaks back in the apartment.

PARAMORE

“You are the only exception. You are the only exception. You are the only exception. You are the only exception.”

INT. APARTMENT - MORNING

Hayley crumples up the note, puts it in her pocket, and slowly climbs back on the couch with her guy. She looks at him, then snuggles in and closes her eyes.

PARAMORE “And I’m on my way to believing

Oh and I’m on my way to believing.”
